Basic operation modes and process data

The EL2502-0010 has three basic operation modes with additional settings for each channel. A detailed description of the operation modes is provided in the respective chapters.

Name

PDO assignment
Index - Name (size in byte.bit)

Description

"PWM, DC":

Channel 1

0x1A00 - “PWM Inputs Channel 1” (2.0)
0x1A01 - “PWM Sys Time Channel 1” (8.0)

0x1603 - “PWM Per. DC Outputs Channel 1” (14.0)

Channel 2
Only channel 1 is activated via the Predefined PDO Assignment "PWM DC". The PDOs for channel 2 must also be activated via the SYNC manager (see "Activating the 2nd channel").

0x1A02 - “PWM Inputs Channel 2” (2.0)
0x1A03 - “PWM Sys Time Channel 2” (8.0)

0x1607 - “PWM Per. DC Outputs Channel 2” (14.0)

This mode should be used if both the duty cycle and the period value are to be changed quickly in real-time context.

  • cyclic duty cycle specification via process data "PWM output" (0x7000:11)
  • cyclic specification of the period value via process data "PWM period" (0x7000:12)
  • change cyclic specification of a timestamp via process data "DC start time" (0x7000:13)
  • Switch on PWM output after reaching a timestamp or specifically change/ switch off the state via process data "Activate DC start time" (0x7000:02) = TRUE
  • Switch off PWM output during current period via process data "Activate DC start time" (0x7000:02) = FALSE

"PWM, Period":

Channel 1

0x1600 - “PWM Outputs Channel 1” (2.0)

Channel 2

0x1604 - “PWM Outputs Channel 2” (2.0)

This mode should be used if both the duty cycle and the period value are to be changed quickly in real-time context.

  • cyclic duty cycle specification via process data "PWM output" (0x70n0:11)
  • cyclic specification of the period value via process data "PWM period" (0x70n0:12)

"PWM":

Channel 1

0x1601 - “PWM Per. Outputs Channel 1” (2.0)

Channel 2

0x1605 - “PWM Per. Outputs Channel 2” (2.0)

This mode is to be used if only the duty cycle is to be changed quickly in the real-time context.

  • cyclic duty cycle specification via process data "PWM output" (0x70n0:11)
  • acyclic specification of the period value via CoE "Period PWM" (0x80n0:15)
1. Selection of operation mode via "Predefined PDO"
The "Predefined PDO Assignment" enables simplified selection of the process data.
Select the desired function at the bottom of the process data tab.
This automatically enables all required PDOs and disables those that are not required.
2. Activation of the 2nd channel
If the Predefined PDO Assignment “PWM, DC” is selected, only the PDOs for channel 1 are active. Due to the impairment of the time accuracy (see note below), 1-channel operation is recommended for the "PWM, DC" operation mode.
If required, the following PDOs must be activated for channel 2 via the "Sync Manger" and the "PDO Assignment":
0x1A02 "PWM Inputs Channel 2"
0x1A03 "PWM Sys Time Channel 2"
0x1607 "PWM Per. DC Outputs Channel 2"
3. Disabling of unused channels
Both channels are active when the Predefined PDO Assignments "PWM" and PWM, Period" are selected. If channels are not used, it is recommended to disable the corresponding channels via the "Sync Manger" and the "PDO Assignment" to avoid possible error messages from the terminal.
If not required, disable the following PDOs for channel 2:
for "PWM": disable 0x1604 "PWM Outputs Channel 2"
for "PWM, Period": disable 0x1605 "PWM Per. Outputs Channel 2".

The temporal accuracy is impaired if the second channel is activated

If a second channel is activated by selecting one of the PDO assignments 0x1604 to 0x1607 or 0x1A02, 0x1A03, please note that the additional calculations in the microcontroller slightly impair the temporal accuracy.

4. Display of process data
The scope of the assigned process data is displayed in "PDO List", the contents of the individual PDOs in "PDO Content". Excluded PDOs are highlighted in gray in “PDO Assignment”.
