General Information

Windows 10 IoT Enterprise: Default User and Password

By default, a user and a password are entered in all Windows 10 images. This is necessary, for example to use "Remote Desktop" to work with the embedded PC.

Beckhoff recommends that you always change default passwords to prevent unauthorized access to your device. The operating system requires a password length of at least three characters. Further recommendations for selecting strong passwords can be found in the Beckhoff Device Manager manual.

SSH settings

SSH (Secure Shell) tools enable remote system administration of the operating system. The SSH server has been part of the Windows operating system since Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2019 LTSC. SSH can be used in the following Windows 10 LTSC versions:

The OpenSSH server is enabled by default in the Beckhoff images. The configuration of the OpenSSH server is stored in a configuration file. You can find the file here: %programdata%\ssh\sshd_config.

OpenSSH provides detailed online documentation of all configuration options (https://man.openbsd.org/sshd_config).

In Beckhoff Images, authentication is preconfigured using a username/password pair and key-based authentication. In order to use the SSH interface, the default password "1" must be changed locally in advance (see section "Default user and password"). The SSH interface is only enabled after the default password has been changed locally in Windows user management or in the Beckhoff Device Manager.

Generate host name

With older industrial PCs, the host name is automatically generated from the prefix CX, CP or BK_IPC and the last 3 bytes of the MAC address. The MAC address is 6 bytes long, where the first 3 bytes are the Beckhoff manufacturer ID 00 01 05.

In contrast, the host name of current devices is formed from the Beckhoff Traceability Number (BTN), which is used on all new devices and printed on the name plate as the serial number. The BTN is a unique, eight-character serial number that will replace all other serial number systems at Beckhoff in the long term and will be introduced gradually for the purpose of standardization.

The information on the name plate of the industrial PC is decisive. If no BTN number is available, the host name is formed from the MAC address. If a BTN number exists, the BTN number is used to form the host name instead. Examples of host names for industrial PCs that are formed from the MAC address or BTN number:

Note that the host name is only generated from the BTN for current devices with a BTN as of the Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 operating system. If there is a BTN but the operating system is older, the host name is formed from the MAC address.
